Payday Loan Alternatives in Alberta (and the Rules If You Use One)
Before taking a payday loan in Alberta, try a pay advance, a payment arrangement with whoever you owe, overdraft, or a small instalment loan. All usually cost less. If you do use one, Alberta caps the cost at $14 per $100 borrowed, limits loans to $1,500, bans rollovers, and lets you repay in instalments.
Alternatives, roughly cheapest first
- Ask for a payment arrangement. Utilities, phone carriers and many landlords will agree to a short delay or split payment if you call before the due date.
- Employer pay advance. Many employers will advance earned wages.
- Overdraft or line of credit at your bank or credit union, if you have one.
- A small instalment loan from a bank, credit union or online lender. Ordinary loans must stay under Canada's 35% APR criminal interest rate (Criminal Interest Rate Regulations). See personal loans.
- Non-profit credit counselling if this keeps happening.

Why payday loans cost so much
$14 per $100 sounds small, but over a few weeks it works out to an annual rate far above any ordinary loan. Payday loans that follow provincial rules are exempt from the 35% APR federal cap that applies to most other loans, which is why the gap is so large.
If you already have one
Use your right to repay in instalments, don't take a second loan to cover the first, and if you are juggling several, talk to a non-profit credit counsellor or read consumer proposal vs debt consolidation.
