Bad Credit Loans in Calgary
Bad credit loans in Calgary come from alternative lenders, secured loans, or co-signed loans. Expect higher rates and smaller amounts. Most consumer loans in Canada must stay under 35% APR; walk away from any lender charging an upfront fee before funding.
A low credit score doesn't mean no one will lend to you. It means fewer lenders will, the ones who do will charge more, and you need to read the terms more carefully. We match you with a lender that actually works with your credit range, so you are not applying blind.
Options that exist for fair and poor credit
- Instalment loans from alternative lenders. Fixed payments over months or years. Higher rates than a bank.
- Secured loans. Using a vehicle or other asset as security can lower the rate or raise the amount.
- Co-signed loans. A co-signer with stronger credit can open bank or credit union options, but they are fully on the hook if you can't pay.
- Credit-builder products. Small secured cards or loans designed to rebuild a score, worth considering alongside any loan.
The legal limit on interest
Since January 1, 2025, Canada's criminal interest rate is 35% APR, set by the Criminal Interest Rate Regulations. Most consumer loans must come in under it. Payday loans that follow provincial rules are treated separately (see payday loans). If a lender quotes you more than 35% APR on an ordinary instalment loan, walk away.
Red flags
A lender who guarantees approval without looking at anything, asks for an upfront fee before you are approved, or wants payment by gift card or e-Transfer before funding is a scam, not a lender. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada keeps a list of warning signs.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a loan with a credit score under 600?
Possibly, from alternative lenders, often for smaller amounts and at higher rates. Security or a co-signer can help.
Will a bad credit loan help rebuild my credit?
On-time payments on a loan that reports to the credit bureaus can help over time. Missed payments will do the opposite, so borrow only what you can repay.
Is 'guaranteed approval' real?
No. Legitimate lenders assess your application. A guarantee, especially paired with an upfront fee, is a classic scam.
